For trailers up to 3500kgs, regular servicing is crucial to ensure safety and optimal performance. A general recommendation is to service a trailer  every 6 months or 6000 miles, whichever comes first. However, more frequent servicing may be necessary for trailers subjected to heavy commercial use or subject to harsh conditions. It’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and consider factors such as load weight, road conditions, and environmental factors when determining the servicing schedule. Regular 2 to 3 month maintenance helps prevent potential issues, ensuring that the trailer remains road-ready and reliable for safe towing.

The cost of trailer servicing and repairs can vary widely depending on several factors, including the type of trailer, its size, age, condition, and the specific services required. On average, basic trailer servicing can start from around £120 for routine inspections, lubrication, and adjustment. However, more comprehensive repairs, including brake, bearing replacements, electrical system rewiring, and welding, can cost £300 or more. We always consult with our customer before commencing any remedial work.  Replacement parts or materials, and any additional services such as fabrication welding or diagnostic testing can also influence the overall cost.

A trailer service typically includes a range of inspections, adjustments, and maintenance tasks aimed at ensuring the trailer’s safety, reliability, and optimal performance. Here are some common components included in a trailer service:

1. **Visual Inspection:** A thorough visual inspection of the trailer, including the chassis, body, suspension components, and tyres, to identify any visible signs of wear, damage, or corrosion.

2. **Brake System Inspection:** Checking the condition of the brake shoes, Bowden cables, and brake links to ensure proper functionality and safety.

3. **Wheel Bearing Inspection:** Inspecting wheel bearings for signs of wear, damage, or contamination, and greasing or replacing them as needed to prevent wheel lockup and ensure smooth operation.

4. **Suspension Inspection:** Checking suspension components, including springs, shocks, and bushings, for wear or damage and adjusting or replacing them as necessary for optimal ride quality and stability.

5. **Tyre Inspection:** Inspecting tyre tread depth, tire pressure, and overall tire condition to ensure proper traction, handling, and safety on the road.

6. **Lights and Electrical Systems Check:** Testing all exterior lights, including brake lights, indicators, fog, reversing and running lights, as well as checking the trailer’s electrical connections and wiring for any issues.

7. **Coupling and Handbrake Inspection:** Inspecting the trailer coupling mechanism, safety chains, and hitch for proper operation and ensuring secure attachment to the towing vehicle.

8. **Greasing and Lubrication:** Applying grease or lubricant to moving parts such as hinges, latches, brake mechanisms and couplings to reduce friction, prevent corrosion, and maintain smooth operation.

9. **Documentation:** We Provide documentation of the service performed, including any findings, recommendations, or repairs needed to address any issues identified during the inspection/Service/Repair.

The number of trailers that can be serviced in a day depends on various factors such as the complexity of the service required, the efficiency of the servicing process, the number of technicians available, and the resources at hand.

On average, a skilled technician can typically service around 4 to 6 trailers per day for routine maintenance tasks such as inspections, lubrication, and minor repairs. However, this number can vary based on factors like the type of trailers, the extent of servicing needed, and any unforeseen issues that may arise during the process.

For more complex repairs or servicing tasks, such as major overhauls or extensive repairs, the number of trailers serviced per day may be lower to ensure thoroughness and quality workmanship.

Ultimately, it’s essential to prioritise quality over quantity to ensure that each trailer receives the attention and care it needs to remain safe, reliable, and roadworthy. Additionally, proper scheduling, efficient workflow management, and adequate staffing can help maximise the number of trailers serviced within a given timeframe.

All driving licence holders can now tow a trailer without taking an additional test. However, there are different rules based on the date you obtained your driver’s licence. You’re allowed to tow a trailer that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM

If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997, you’re now allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM.

Check your car’s handbook to find out its gross train weight (GTW). This is the total allowable weight of the car plus the trailer plus the load.

Regular tyre checks should be conducted before every journey and consistently monitored for cracks, splits, and other damage. Maintaining proper tyre pressure and ensuring correct wheel alignment can help extend tyre life. Always consult your trailer owners manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for tyre maintenance and replacement. We recommend tyres are replaced every 5 years.
